Surf Spots

Puerto Escondido has numerous surf schools and instructors catering to different skill levels. Surf lessons typically take place at two main beaches – Carrizalillo and La Punta (Punta Zicatela) – with the heavy waves of Playa Zicatela reserved for advanced surfers. Surf schools will choose the beach each day based on conditions and student ability . Below are the key surf spots for lessons and the types of surfers they suit:

Playa Carrizalillo (Beginner Cove)

Difficulty: Beginner Cove
Best Tide: Mid to High
Best Swell: E-SE 3-6ft
Best Wind: W-NW

Features:

  • Multiple peaks
  • Sandy bottom
  • Easy access
  • Lifeguard present

A sheltered bay with gentle, slow waves ideal for learning. It's regarded as 'the best waves to learn to surf' in Puerto Escondido. Waves break over a rock reef and roll softly toward the beach, sometimes allowing beginners to ride whitewater for long distances (you might even stand up twice on one wave). This calm spot is nearly a sure bet for first-timers to succeed in catching a wave. Every day you'll see new surfers and instructors here, with classes running daily on the mellow breakers. Several surf schools operate at Carrizalillo or bring students here for introductory lessons. Expect a friendly, crowded lineup of beginners, so patience and respect are key.

La Punta (Punta Zicatela)

Difficulty: Point Break for Beginner-Intermediate
Best Tide: Mid
Best Swell: S-SW 4-8ft
Best Wind: NE

Features:

  • Point break
  • Long rides
  • Consistent waves
  • Surf shops nearby

Located at the far southern end of Zicatela, 'La Punta' offers a softer left point break that's great fun for those past the absolute beginner stage. The wave is slower and breaks along a rocky point, making it ideal for advanced beginners and intermediates building confidence. Surf schools do operate here – you'll spot many surf camps and coaches in the water – but it's not as forgiving as Carrizalillo for a total novice. The takeoff is near a rocky outcrop and the wave peels left; coaches often position learners away from the rocks to practice safely. La Punta's waves are larger and a bit more powerful, especially at low tide when they can form tubing sections. At high tide the break is gentler, which is better for less experienced surfers. The vibe in La Punta is a major draw: the beachfront village has a unique surf-town atmosphere with sandy streets, surf shops, and some of Puerto's best restaurants and bars nearby, so surfers often relax here before and after sessions.

Playa Zicatela (Mexican Pipeline)

Difficulty: Advanced to Expert
Best Tide: Low to Mid
Best Swell: S-SW 6-15ft
Best Wind: NE-NW

Features:

  • Powerful barrels
  • Beach break
  • International reputation
  • Big wave spot

Zicatela is Puerto Escondido's legendary surf beach, known worldwide for its big, hollow barrels and expert-level conditions. This advanced to pro-only spot is typically not used for beginner lessons – in fact it's explicitly 'not an ideal surf spot for beginners — professionals only.' The waves at Zicatela can reach colossal sizes (especially May–October) with very steep, powerful drops, earning it the Mexican Pipeline nickname. Surf schools generally do NOT take novices here, but some experienced instructors offer coaching sessions for advanced surfers seeking to tackle Zicatela's tubes. For example, advanced students or surf camp participants might do guided dawn patrols at Zicatela on smaller days to learn about big-wave positioning and get tips on handling the infamous riptides. In the winter months when Zicatela's swell is smaller, it 'gives advanced learners the opportunity to test their newfound skills.' Under proper guidance, a confident intermediate could try a mellow day at Zicatela, but always with caution. Most visitors, however, will enjoy Zicatela as spectators unless they are truly experienced – it's common to watch pro surfers and competitions here from the beach while beginners stick to the gentler breaks.

Chacahua

Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced
Best Tide: Mid to High
Best Swell: S-SW 4-8ft
Best Wind: NE

Features:

  • Multiple breaks
  • Less crowded
  • Scenic location
  • Wildlife viewing

Located about 1.5 hours from Puerto Escondido, Chacahua is a beautiful and less crowded surf spot within a national park. The area features several breaks including a point break and beach breaks. The waves here are more consistent and powerful than in Puerto Escondido, making it a great spot for intermediate to advanced surfers. The journey to Chacahua involves a boat ride through a lagoon, adding to the adventure. The area is known for its pristine beaches, mangrove forests, and abundant wildlife.

Barra de la Cruz

Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced
Best Tide: Mid
Best Swell: S-SW 4-8ft
Best Wind: NE

Features:

  • World-class right point break
  • Long rides
  • Protected area
  • Community managed

Located about 2 hours from Puerto Escondido, Barra de la Cruz is a world-class right-hand point break that offers long, perfect waves. The wave is known for its consistency and quality, often producing long rides with multiple sections. The break works best on a south swell and can handle size well. The area is part of a protected natural reserve, and the local community manages access to maintain the quality of the surf spot. The wave is suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers, with the best conditions typically found during the summer months.
